The Hague - The Dutch group TNT Express announced on Monday that it would lay off 4,000 employees over the next three years, after the European Commission (EC) has blocked the proposed purchase of the company by the American group UPS. Restructuring initiated to improve the profitability of the group, which also include the reduction of airline capacity and end of activities in China and Brazil, will cost 150 million euros by 2015, the company said. The sale process of the Brazilian subsidiary latin billboard awards has begun, according to the group. Like the U.S. last week FedEx, TNT Express admitted it faces pressures on prices and intense competition. The goal is to save 220 million euros by 2015, according to the plan "Deliver", which essentially provides a readjustment of the group in Europe, which has strong positions in the market distributing small packages. The intention of the UPS to buy TNT Express (a deal valued at 6.77 billion dollars) in January was blocked by the European Commission, which expressed concern about the effects of the merger on competition in the industry.
