I received this book from a friend before I moved to Australia. After a long boat trip, having spen

This book, which takes place at the end of the 19th century, has two story lines that deal with the growing up of two young people, Oscar and Lucinda, both of which are raised by a parent. Oscar lives with his father emmys winners in England. His mother is drowned in the sea, and since that time Oscar frantic for water. His father is a minister, who is against many Christian things. He is against celebrating Christmas and teaches his son that this is a normal working emmys winners day. There is a disposal site between Oscar and his father after the housekeeper sneak a Christmas pudding for Oscar has made and his father discovered him when he tastes it. He beats his son in the face and takes him to the sea, looking for sea creatures (a passion of the father). After this event, Oscar gets the idea that his father does not think about God in the right way. He thinks that God gives him a sign that he needs to follow. Another denomination Oscar finally emmys winners goes with his father away and goes to the Anglican vicar in the same village. This man and his wife take the boy home and ensure that he can eventually go to college. Oscar grows up to be a world strange boy.
Lucinda lives with her mother in Paramatta (in Sydney). Her father was killed in an accident with a horse. Her mother has a feminist perspective on the world and feeds Lucinda in that same line. Lucinda is an independent young woman, which is very unusual at the time. If they are 17 years old, her mother dies and the farm where they live on sold. The moment Lucinda 18 years she gets the money and she leaves her family that has collected in the intervening period (and tried to get her 'normal'). Lucinda goes to Sydney and buys a glass factory. Her mother has taught her to work in factories for women in their time, the way to a life of its own. That her mother was ahead of her time .... Lucinda has heavy as the owner of the factory. The men at the factory feel embarrassed when she comes and actually take her seriously.
At one point come Oscar and Lucinda each other on the boat from Southampton to Sydney. They fall in love, but dare not admit it. They both think the other one does not find them interesting, emmys winners and neither of them dares to take action. Oscar eventually find a way through a detour (Lucinda's passion for glass) are making. Admiration for her clear But even then they do not understand each other and misunderstandings lead to even more misunderstandings.
I received this book from a friend before I moved to Australia. After a long boat trip, having spent months in the bookcase and weeks in a book crate time to finally read the book. Was The fact that the book is largely set in Australia aroused my interest. emmys winners I find it hard to show what I think of this book. Once I was in the story was interesting enough to read, but I had trouble. It's not the kind of book I would have bought quickly. Itself
I think this is an interesting book for a book circle, because (especially if the book circle a mixed group) some interesting discussion points in it that have to do with the differences between men and women (both past and nowadays).
hettriumviraat: hmm, this is a very slow response on my part, sorry! Opinions about a book are often different. Garcia Marquez, I've never read, but "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is on the list 'to be read. " December 9, 2011 06:45
